Eye contact during sex is one of those things people either absolutely love… or avoid like they’re trying not to get picked by the teacher.
When we asked the GGO community how they felt about eye contact during sex, 73% said they loved it. But almost one in four queens admitted they either hated it (20%) or felt too scared to try it (7%).

If you’re in that second group, welcome. You’re in very good company.
The truth is, eye contact can feel incredibly intense because you’re not just being touched, you’re being seen. That level of vulnerability can feel exciting, awkward, emotional, or somehow all three at once.
The good news? It’s not something you’re naturally good or bad at. Like trying a new position or introducing a toy into the bedroom, confidence comes with practice.
Whether you’re already a soul-staring queen or someone who’s suddenly fascinated by the ceiling fan the moment things heat up, here’s why eye contact feels so powerful and how to make it feel a whole lot more natural.
Why is eye contact during sex so intense?
Sex is already one of the most vulnerable things most of us do. Adding eye contact brings emotional vulnerability into the mix too.

When you lock eyes with someone during an intimate moment, you’re inviting them to see your reactions, your confidence, your nerves and your pleasure in real time. That’s a level of closeness we don’t experience very often in everyday life.
It’s also why eye contact during intimacy can make everything feel turned up a notch. A few seconds can feel far more intimate than an entire position because your attention is completely on each other.

One of the biggest things we’ve learnt since starting Girls Get Off is that confidence in the bedroom rarely starts with a new position or toy. It starts with feeling safe enough to let someone really see you. Eye contact can feel vulnerable at first, but once you stop worrying about how you look and start enjoying how you feel, everything changes. That’s the kind of connection we hope every queen gets to experience.” - Jo & Viv, Founders of Girls Get Off |
One thing we’ve noticed is that people often assume eye contact has to be serious. It doesn’t.
Sometimes it’s smiling because your partner pulled a ridiculous face.
Sometimes it’s laughing halfway through.
Sometimes it’s simply catching each other’s eyes for a second before diving back into the moment.
That’s intimacy too.
What locking eyes actually does for you
Eye contact isn’t about looking romantic for the movies. It can genuinely change the way you experience intimacy together.
It can help:
-
Build connection. A held gaze reminds your partner, “I’m right here with you.”
-
Communicate without words. You’ll often notice what feels good long before anyone says it out loud.
-
Slow things down. Eye contact naturally encourages you to stay present instead of rushing to the finish line.
-
Boost confidence. Seeing your partner genuinely enjoying themselves can be one of the biggest confidence boosts there is.
-
Make the moment more memorable. Many people find those tiny moments of connection are what they remember most afterwards.
Feel awkward? Same, queen.
If you’ve ever accidentally locked eyes halfway through sex and immediately burst out laughing…

Congratulations.
It’s normal.
Most of us weren’t taught that intimacy is something you learn. We were either shown unrealistic versions of sex in movies and porn or taught not to talk about it at all.
No wonder making eye contact can feel surprisingly vulnerable.
One of our customers, Emily, shared how introducing We Get Off brought a whole new level of connection to her and her husband’s weekly date nights:
|
“The first time we tried it, hubby asked me to clip it on my undies and used the remote control on me while we were spooning on the couch watching a movie. Hubby couldn’t get enough, loved watching me get all hot n heavy. Then we moved to the bedroom… I had the remote in one hand while putting his d in my mouth, looking up at him… My advice for anyone curious would be to not let the ring intimidate you too much! I didn’t really get it but now I get it iykyk 🤣 Thank you for spicing up our date nights, we can’t get enough.” - Emily |
What we love about Emily’s story isn’t just the toy. It’s that she describes being present with each other, looking at each other, teasing each other and genuinely having fun. That’s the kind of connection this article is really about.
How to hold eye contact in bed (without making it weird)
You don’t have to go from avoiding eye contact to staring into each other’s souls for twenty minutes.
Start small.
Try the Three Mississippi. Hold their gaze for three seconds, then look away naturally. As it becomes more comfortable, stretch it to four or five seconds.
Keep it soft. This isn’t a staring competition. Relax your face, blink normally and don’t overthink it. Think heart eyes, not laser eyes.
Break it up with kisses. Looking, kissing and looking again feels much more natural than maintaining one long gaze.
Turn the lights down. Soft lighting often makes people feel more relaxed and less self-conscious.
Practise outside the bedroom. Hold eye contact across the dinner table or while cuddling on the couch. Intimacy isn’t something that only starts once you’re naked.
Use your words. A quiet “you look so good” or “that feels amazing” while making eye contact often feels more natural than silent staring.

HOT TIP: If you both start laughing halfway through, don’t panic. Laughing together is connection. It doesn’t ruin the moment - it usually makes it even better. |
The best positions for eye contact
Some positions naturally make eye contact easier than others. If holding someone’s gaze still feels a little intimidating, these are a great place to start.
|
Position |
Eye contact level |
Why it works |
|
Missionary (with a pillow under the hips) |
High |
Face-to-face, easy to stay close and communicate. |
|
Lotus (seated, legs wrapped around each other) |
Maximum |
Chest-to-chest with nowhere to rush. Perfect for slowing things down. |
|
Riding, leaning slightly back |
High |
You set the pace while staying connected through eye contact. |
|
Side-lying, face-to-face |
Medium |
Relaxed, cosy and ideal if you’re easing into it. |
|
Spooning with a glance back |
Low |
Great if full eye contact still feels like a big step. |
If you want to introduce a toy without taking away from the connection, smaller, partner-friendly options tend to work best. They let you stay close, keep the eye contact flowing and focus on each other instead of trying to work around something bulky.
Our We Get Off bundle was designed with shared pleasure in mind, making it a natural addition for couples who want to keep the focus on each other while adding something new to date night.
What does intense eye contact during sex actually mean?
Probably a lot less than TikTok would have you believe.
Intense eye contact doesn’t automatically mean someone’s fallen madly in love with you, and avoiding it doesn’t mean they’re emotionally unavailable.
More often than not, it simply means someone is present.
Some people naturally love locking eyes throughout sex. Others close their eyes because it helps them focus on sensation. Most of us move between the two depending on our mood, confidence or even the day we’ve had.
The important thing isn’t how long you hold eye contact.
It’s whether you both feel comfortable enough to be yourselves.
If you’re wondering what your partner is thinking, don’t spend the whole time trying to decode their facial expressions. Ask them afterwards. A quick conversation will tell you far more than playing detective ever will.
When closing your eyes is actually the better option
Let’s clear something up. Closing your eyes isn’t “doing intimacy wrong.” Sometimes shutting everything else out is exactly what helps you stay in the moment. For some queens, eye contact creates excitement.

For others, closing their eyes helps them tune into every touch, kiss and sensation without distraction.
Neither is better.
Eye contact is simply another way to connect, not a relationship test or something you should force because the internet told you to.
The best sex isn’t about following rules.
It’s about finding what helps you feel safe, connected and confident.
Ready to level up your connection?
Eye contact doesn’t cost a thing, takes only a few seconds to try and could completely change the way you experience intimacy together.
Start with the Three Mississippi challenge. Try one of the face-to-face positions above. And if you feel like adding something new into the mix, our Partner Friendly Collection is full of toys designed to bring couples closer together without taking over the moment. If you’re flying solo, don’t count yourself out either. Learning what helps you feel present with your own body is just as valuable, and our Vibrators Collection is a great place to start.

⭐ 4.9 Star Rating Review! |
At the end of the day, eye contact isn’t about perfect timing or holding someone’s gaze for an entire session.
It’s about those little moments where you look at each other and think, “Yep… we’re right here together.”
And honestly?
We reckon that’s pretty hot.
